Conservative Bloggers Want CPAC To Drop Coulter
Ed Morrissey of Captain's Quarters, Seth Hackbarth of The American Mind and Patrick Hynes of Ankle Biting Pundits are among the influential conservative bloggers incensed by pundit/author/TV personality Ann Coulter's use of a derogatory word for gays in a one-liner about Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. And they've teamed up, in an open letter to the Conservative Political Action Conference and its sponsors, to urge the event organizers to sever ties to Coulter for good.
Acknowledging the frequent on-air guest "used to serve the movement well," the bloggers contend that "Coulter's fearlessness has become an addiction to shock value." The letter reminds CPAC organizers/sponsors that Coulter called Iranians "ragheads" at last year's gathering.
"Coulter's vicious word choice tells the world she care little about the feelings of a large group that often feels marginalized and despised. Her word choice forces conservatives to waste time defending themselves against charges of homophobia rather than advancing conservative ideas," the bloggers continue.
It was conservative bloggers in attendance at CPAC that were among the first to express outrage after Coulter referred to Edwards as a "faggot," as The Gate reported on Friday. Mitt Romney, whom Coulter seemed to endorse, and Rudy Giuliani both distanced themselves from the remarks later that day. McCain also weighed in with his disapproval, even though he skipped the conference.
A video of Romney and Coulter chatting it up backstage before Coulter made her remarks is now on YouTube. (Hat Tip: Hotline)
