Poll Track: Edwards Sees Movement In Static Field

When John Edwards announced he would continue to seek the Democratic nomination for president even though his wife was again battling cancer, this time in an incurable form, many wondered (though few would say aloud) a rather uncomfortable thought: Will this help him politically?

A very preliminary answer seems to be: Yes.

In today's Poll Track (subscription), a new Gallup/USA Today survey shows a 5-point uptick for Edwards' standing in the Democratic field since the last measure, earlier this month. Pollsters began phoning respondents last Friday, a day after John and Elizabeth Edwards' press conference, which dominated the campaign news cycle straight through the weekend. The leaders in the field, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and Al Gore, saw miniscule or no movement.

Meanwhile, as Congress and the White House continue to butt heads over the attorney firings scandal, both Gallup/USA and Pew Research Center pollsters find many respondents split on whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should hold on to his job.
