Earlybird Roundup: Missing Soldier Identified, Iran Sanctions Sought
Iraq. The body of one of the three missing U.S. soldiers in Iraq was recovered yesterday south of Baghdad in the Euphrates River, the military confirmed. The House could begin debating the latest version of the war supplemental bill as early as today, posing a political dilemma for Democrats who have vowed to impose a timeline for troop withdrawal.
Mideast. The Bush administration will seek tougher sanctions on Iran following a new report detailing the country's uranium enrichment progress. Elsewhere in the region, tensions continued to rise today between Israeli and Palestinian factions and Islamic militants and the Lebanese military.
Immigration. The Senate voted yesterday to shrink the proposed guest worker program in the new immigration bill. And Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff lashed out at both conservative and liberal critics of the proposed legislation.
Attorney firings. Following Monica Goodling's testimony yesterday, congressional Democrats are now targeting (subscription) the White House in their investigation.
Nation. The Federal Aviation Administration has eased restrictions in an effort to help airlines get passengers to their destinations on time. And the Food and Drug Administration held firm in banning blood donations from gay men.
