Earlybird Roundup: Lebanon Conflict, NATO, Gonzales

World. At least 39 people have been killed in violent clashes in Lebanon, where the army is fighting a new group of Palestinian militants supposedly linked to al-Qaida.

NATO. At his Crawford ranch, President Bush is spending some one-on-one time with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in hopes of garnering more help with the conflict in Afghanistan. More than a dozen people were killed Sunday in a suicide bombing at a market.

U.S. attorney firings. GOP Sen. Arlen Specter suggested on "Face the Nation" yesterday that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales might resign before the Senate even holds its no-confidence vote. Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer chimed in on "Fox News Sunday," saying, "The bottom line is the only person who thinks that the attorney general should remain attorney general is the president."

Congress. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell predicted a long road ahead for the immigration bill in the Senate, as groups from both sides assailed the compromise over the weekend.

Terrorism. After more than five years in U.S. custody, David Hicks -- the first detainee at Guantanamo Bay convicted as an enemy combatant -- returned to his home country of Australia to finish out his sentence.

Supreme Court. Former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor spoke out against laws changing "just because the faces on the court have changed" in a recent interview.
