Earlybird Roundup: Sudan Sanctions, U.S.-Iranian Talks
Darfur. This morning, President Bush laid out a new plan to pressure the Sudanese government to stop the genocide in Darfur.
Iran. In Baghdad, U.S. and Iranian diplomats held their first face-to-face talks in almost 30 years, focusing on security in Iraq. Meanwhile, Tehran officially charged three Iranian-Americans being held in Iran "with endangering national security."
Memorial Day. The president and 2008 White House hopefuls used the holiday to console families of fallen soldiers and express their support for the troops currently fighting in Iraq. Meanwhile, Cindy Sheehan, mother of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq and outspoken critic of the Bush administration, quit her public role in the anti-war movement.
Congress. Lawmakers returning to their districts for the Memorial Day recess are anticipating heated debates over Iraq (subscription), immigration and energy policy this summer.
