Earlybird Roundup: Immigration Hurdles, Padilla Trial, Blair's Last Day

Immigration. Despite clearing a crucial test vote yesterday, the immigration reform bill still faces hurdles from opponents on both sides of the aisle. Meanwhile, President Bush's "amnesty" gaffe landed him in hot water.

Congress. The Senate GOP blocked the union card-check bill yesterday, and SEC Chairman Christopher Cox defended his agency before a House panel.

Nation. Jurors in the terrorism trial of Jose Padilla viewed a decade-old interview of Osama bin Laden against the wishes of defense attorneys. In Alabama, former Gov. Don Siegelman (D) and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy objected to their sentences in a federal corruption case.

Blair's farewell. British Prime Minister Tony Blair completed his last day on the job today and passed the torch to Gordon Brown. Blair is expected to take up a post as a special envoy for the Mideast Quartet.
