Earlybird Roundup: G-8 Summit, Embassy Probe, Immigration
World. The G-8 summit opened with world leaders clashing over global warming, but President Bush was optimistic about the chance of an agreement. Bush had breakfast with outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair this morning and will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin later today.
Washington. The Department of Justice launched a probe into the Kuwaiti company (subscription) constructing the U.S. Embassy in Iraq after allegations that workers were sent to Baghdad without their permission.
Congress. Indicating fairly high support for the comprehensive immigration bill, the Senate yesterday threw out several proposed amendments to the bill. A cloture vote is set for today.
Military. The Pentagon's acquisitions chief, Kenneth Krieg, resigned yesterday, becoming the latest in a series of high-level departures from the Defense Department.
Abramoff scandal. A new person was fingered in the case surrounding the lobbying activities of Jack Abramoff: Italia Federici, a Republican activist who is charged with failing to pay income taxes and lying to a Senate committee.
