Earlybird Roundup: Libby Sentence, Padilla Trial, Pearl Arrest
Courts. I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby will be sentenced today, and he may qualify for a lighter sentence than the 15 to 21 months that federal guidelines recommend.
Terrorism. Jurors heard tapes of the FBI's wiretap evidence at the trial of terrorism suspect Jose Padilla yesterday. Prosecutors also presented lengthy transcripts of phone calls and witnesses who testified about financial transactions.
Administration. In Prague today, President Bush will meet with representatives from pro-democracy groups who live under authoritarian regimes as part of his eight-day trip to Europe. Bush will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Germany later this week.
World I. Two men have been arrested in Pakistan in connection with the 2002 kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Police said that the suspects were picked up yesterday, but CNN reports that "a lawyer for the men's families said they had been picked up by security agencies in 2003 and held secretly since then."
World II. Also in Pakistan, President Pervez Musharraf cracked down further on the media yesterday, tightening restrictions on the country's broadcast media.
