News Roundup: Giuliani & McCain Skipping Iowa Straw Poll
World. The United States refused to sign on to a greenhouse emissions cap as the G-8 summit got off to a rocky start in Germany. President Bush also tried to lower the temperature on the missile shield controversy by trying to assure allies that Russia "was not an enemy" and would not attack Europe.
Iraq. Baghdad was hit with two car bombings as the U.S. military announced the deaths of four more troops.
Congress. Andrew Speaker, the man who set off a global health alert last month, testified that he was told by doctors his tuberculosis wasn't contagious when he decided to elude authorities while on his honeymoon. Lawmakers said the episode highlighted weaknesses in the nation's defense against bioterrorism.
Campaigns. In a nod to the polarizing effect the immigration debate has had on the GOP, the NRSC is preparing a two-sided forum on its Web site, The Hill reports. Meanwhile, both John McCain and Rudy Giuliani announced they would skip the Ames, Iowa, straw poll.
Economy. The Dow fell more than 100 points today amid fears of inflation and rising interest rates.
