News Roundup: Immigration, Africa Aid, Iraq 'Czar'

Congress. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to put a controversial immigration proposal up for cloture. In the House, lawmakers sent a bill expanding embryonic stem cell research to the White House.

G-8. President Bush said he would consider a suggestion from Vladimir Putin that part of a missile defense shield planned for Europe be set up jointly with Russia in Azerbaijan. Rocker Bono is going after leaders on their past pledges to increase aid to Africa.

World. Iran says its investigation into the three-month-long disappearance of a former FBI agent there has produced no leads, the Washington Post reports.

Iraq. Bush's nominee to head up coordination in the war effort, Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, testified that he did not think the "surge" strategy would work when it was announced and described the results so far as mixed.

Campaigns. A South Carolina county chair for John McCain's campaign resigned over the Republican's support of the immigration compromise.
