News Roundup: Iraq Deaths, Fuel Economy, Lebanese War
Iraq. Pentagon officials today detailed a spate of recent troop deaths -- at least 15 soldiers in the last two days.
Congress. The Senate reached a compromise this afternoon on energy, agreeing to raise auto fuel economy standards from 27.5 to 35 miles per gallon. But a group of Republican senators remains determined that no such compromise will be struck on immigration.
Mideast. Lebanon claimed today that it has won its monthlong war against the militant group Fatah al-Islam, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas pondered the prospect of calling new elections to bolster his power after last week's military defeat to Hamas.
Economy. Stocks rallied after a series of ups and downs today, amid positive reports from the manufacturing sector.
WH 2008. Ralph Nader says he would seriously consider another independent run for the presidency in '08, and called Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton a "coward."
