Earlybird Roundup: Kansas Oil Spill, Bombing Suspects, Putin Offer
Nation. Adding to destruction from the massive flooding in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, thousands of gallons of oil leaked from a refinery, forcing more evacuations as the spill made its way down a Kansas river.
Terrorism. Australian officials have picked up two doctors for questioning in connection with the attempted U.K. car bombings last weekend. Meanwhile, British officials reached out to Muslims in a "hearts and minds" campaign.
Administration. At the end of his trip to Kennebunkport, Maine, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered President Bush a counterproposal on working together to create a controversial missile defense shield.
World. Japanese Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma resigned yesterday, after suggesting that the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified.
Congress. Democrats hit an impasse on ethics reform, and Republicans plan to use the now-defunct immigration bill to revive the debate on border security.
