Earlybird Roundup: Kirkuk Car Bombs, Palestinian Aid
Iraq. Car bombs ripped through Kirkuk today, leaving at least 80 people dead in the northern Iraqi city. Over the weekend, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley indicated that President Bush would not be swayed by some GOP lawmakers' attempts to force change in his war policies.
Mideast. In a speech planned for today, Bush will announce increased U.S. support for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. And Israel has agreed to grant amnesty to 178 Palestinian militants as leaders meet today to discuss the situation in the Palestinian territories.
Congress. The Los Angeles Times reports that an internal government investigation reveals the House Intelligence Committee's role in the Randy "Duke" Cunningham bribery scandal.
Nation. Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles has apologized to the victims of clergy abuse after the archdiocese reached a $660-million settlement in the case.
Economy. U.S. gas prices are rising again, due to problems at two Midwest refineries.
