Earlybird Roundup: NYC & D.C. Get More Funds, Marine Convicted
Administration. New York City and Washington, D.C., got big increases in counterterrorism funding from the Department of Homeland Security yesterday, but Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff warned there would be controversy over the allocations.
Iraq. Marine Cpl. Trent Thomas was found guilty yesterday of killing an Iraqi man in Hamandiya last year. He could face a life sentence.
Congress. The House rejected President Bush's plan to slice the federal subsidy for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting last night, and a House committee tweaked the farm subsidy system.
Washington. Bush appointed Craig Morford, a Nashville attorney, to fill former deputy attorney general Paul McNulty's spot.
Nation. Manhattan felt a huge explosion when an underground steam pipe burst yesterday, sending a huge cloud through the streets. At least 30 people were injured and one person died from cardiac arrest. Officials said it was not an act of terrorism.
