Earlybird Roundup: Walton Comments, Surgeon General Hearings

Iraq. Just hours after President Bush fumed at Congress for trying to legislate an end to the war, the House voted yesterday to withdraw troops from Iraq by April.

Courts. Judge Reggie Walton expressed frustration with Bush's commutation of the prison sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, saying that "the court is somewhat perplexed as to how its sentence could accurately be characterized as 'excessive.'"

Congress. Hearings for the nominee to be the next surgeon general, Dr. James Holsinger, began with a Senate panel yesterday.

Terrorism. Al-Qaida is sneaking operatives into the United States, according to a draft National Intelligence Estimate. But Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he believes al-Qaida is not as powerful as it was immediately before 9/11.

Pakistan. President Pervez Musharraf defended his decision to have the military storm the Red Mosque earlier this week to uproot the militants who had taken over the building.
