News Roundup: China Safety, Executive Privilege Slap

Economy. The Dow surged to close at a record 13,861.73 on unexpectedly positive retail reports.

China. Beijing will implement a food safety system next month in preparation for the 2008 Olympics, as more reports on China's lax monitoring of the food and drug industry surface.

Congress. A House Judiciary subcommittee rejected President Bush's claim of executive privilege in his order prohibiting former aides from testifying on last year's attorney firings.

Iraq. Fighting between U.S. forces and Shiite militants in eastern Baghdad killed 19 people and injured 21. Meanwhile, British forces are denying allegations that they unleased carnivorous badgers in Basra to terrorize Iraqis.

Nation. Former Newark, N.J., Mayor Sharpe James was indicted on 33 corruption counts, including diverting tax dollars for his personal use and fraud.
