News Roundup: Petraeus Sees Long War, Bush Rejects Subpoenas
Nation. Bill Proenza, director of the National Hurricane Center, has been reassigned after a number of forecasters joined forces to demand his ouster.
Iraq. "I don't know whether this will be decades, but the average counter insurgency is somewhere around a nine or a 10-year endeavor," Lt. Gen. David Petraeus told BBC News, in response to growing demands for a withdrawal plan for Iraq.
Attorney firings. Responding to Congressional subpoenas, President Bush again invoked executive privilege and denied lawmakers access to two former White House aides.
Pa. shutdown. Twenty-five-thousand state employees are still off with no pay today as a judge considers whether Gov. Ed Rendell's decision to furlough those workers in response to a budget impasse is illegal.
Iran. IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei says Iran has slowed down its uranium enrichment program.
