Earlybird Roundup: APEC Eyes Protests; Petraeus Open To Small Drawdown

APEC. Riot police and protesters clashed at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Sydney yesterday, and Australian police fear a large anti-Bush rally planned for tomorrow will take a violent turn.

Iraq. Gen. David Petraeus signaled he'd consider a small drawdown of U.S. troops early next year, although he's still standing firm behind the surge.

Congress. The Senate approved a foreign spending bill yesterday with a veto-prone amendment which would overturn a ban on international aid for foreign groups that perform abortions or related services.

Nation. Eleven officials were arrested in a sweeping corruption probe in New Jersey yesterday. Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu was also nabbed in Colorado after failing to appear for several court appearances.

Economy. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan compared the current economic situation to similar market upheavals in the late 1980s and 90s.
