Earlybird Roundup: Germ Labs, Iraq Arms Sale

Nation. Federal investigators say they can't identify all the U.S. research labs handling dangerous germs and toxins that could become terrorist targets.

Iraq. The Iraqi government is set to circumvent the U.S. and pay China $100 million for arms that would go to police officers, although some fear the weapons would wind up in the hands of insurgents.

Congress. President Bush's veto of Congress' SCHIP proposal yesterday means the fight in the House will likely drag on for months.

Economy. The Democratic leadership is calling for the creation of a new housing czar to head up the government's response to the subprime mortgage crisis.

World. In South Africa, more than 2,000 gold miners were rescued after being trapped in a mine near Johannesburg overnight.
